Drinking and dining review: Paya Thai Fish & Chips

Review and photos by Kurt Kwon

Paya Thai Fish & Chips is located in Freighthouse Square, at 430 E 25th St.

Another little gem in the Freighthouse square! Sometimes you want to be bad and have some fried food. Good fish and chips seem to be difficult to find, but I think I finally found one that's good. They use fresh fish, which is key for great fish and chips. Traditional cod and halibut are offered, but the crunchy crust makes the fish and chips stand out. The prices are reasonable for the quantity of food offered. I easily shared the special of the day that included two big pieces of cod and five decent-sized shrimp.

Surprisingly, Paya Thai offers healthier options, which include a grilled salmon salad and a simply grilled cod with light Cajun seasoning. The lovely lady offered us a free taste of the grilled cod, as she saw us eyeing one of the employee's meals. She gave us a huge chunk and it was cooked perfectly. It could have used a little more salt, but otherwise very delicious.

You don't have to be bad! Have the grilled option if you’re feeling guilty, but splurge a little once in a while and try the fish and chips. I'm going to try the halibut next time!
