Dining and drinking review: Infinite Soups

What's better than delicious, hot soup on a cold day? Being able to walk to Infinite Soups near Wright Park and choose from their vast selection! What's better than that? Being able to walk to the new Infinite Soups location, in the old post office building just up the street!

Infinite Soups has two locations: 445 Tacoma Avenue South and 1102 A Street

The Best Reason to Have Soup
If you’re like me, you have a pretty good idea of what feels like a good time to have soup. It could be a rainy or gray day with a slight chill, and a damp feel to it that goes right to your bones. Or it could be when I have a cold and just need some comfort in a bowl to cure what ails me. There’s something about the smell, texture and visual appeal of a steaming bowl of hot, delicious soup full of flavor and nourishment that just hits the spot. Thanks to Infinite Soups in downtown Tacoma, I have now decided that the best reason to have soup there is just because it’s delicious.

Infinite Soups is not your sit-down-and-relax-a-bit kind of restaurant. With two downtown locations, it’s strictly take-out, but they do have agreements with neighboring establishments that allow you to bring your soup with you and enjoy it in a casual setting. The Tacoma Avenue location has an agreement with Malarkey’s Pool and Brew right next door, and with Corina Bakery just a block down the way. The new second location is located at 1102 A Street at the Old Post Office building downtown, but the entrance is at an open loading door facing 12th Street, and is only opened on weekdays.

We haven’t visited the post office location yet, so if you’re interested in staying to eat, call ahead to find out if there is a similar seating arrangement with other neighboring restaurants. Per the website, Infinite Soups also has a booth at the Broadway Farmer’s Market during regular market season.

The soup is THE reason to visit. With over 20 fresh choices each day under the categories of Creamy, Non-Creamy, Vegan and Vegetarian, there is something for every one. Check their Facebook page if you want to know what’s cooking on the day you’re going. On a recent visit, we tried the Chicken Gorgonzola Tortellini and the Spicy Peanut soup. Both of them knocked our socks off with big flavor and warm deliciousness. Each bite was better than the one before and it almost inspired us to commit to trying mindfulness meditation just so we could savor and take our time enjoying each spoonful. You can also buy breads, baguettes and baked goods supplied by Corina Bakery. Go for the drop biscuit -- it’s To Die For and works so well with the soup. Portion size options are cup, bowl or pint and the bowl size seemed to be filling enough with the drop biscuit for our hearty appetites. While this review is based only on one visit, everyone we’ve asked about Infinite Soups consistently talks about how excellent the soups are.

We had a very positive service experience all the way from a pre-visit phone call to find out exactly where they were located, and the positive service continued throughout our visit. I’ve heard tell that the folks there can lean toward the surly side, but that was not our experience based on our visit. Surly or not, this is the place for delicious soup and baked goods. And if you are craving soup for any reason, whether it be related to weather, health or anything else, Infinite Soups is just what the doctor ordered.
