Dining and drinking review: Galanga Thai Cuisine

Galanga Thai Cuisine is located at 1129 Broadway

Finding a good Thai place in downtown Tacoma is tough. Most people think of Indochine. While overall they are pretty good, sometimes you just need to break away from the fancy setting and go to a place that focuses on just the food. Galanga fits that bill pretty well. While they aren't the best I've had, they do fill that void. They seem to use fresh ingredients and have some more truly traditional dishes that I haven't tried before.

For an appetizer, I tried the Miang Kum. It is the Thai version of build your own appetizer with ingredients including sliced lime, diced fresh ginger, shallot, sliced fresh Thai chili, dried shrimp, roasted peanut and toasted coconut, wrapped in fresh chaplu leaf and topped with miang kum sauce. It wasn't quite what I was expecting as most of the ingredients were dry, but when you put it all together it provides a unique Thai burst of flavor. While it was interesting, I probably wouldn't order it again because the price point seemed a bit high.

Two entrees were ordered. The Kanomjean Kaeng Kiew Huan was interesting. It is described as a steamed, soft rice noodles in a green curry-based broth which included eggplant and green beans, similar to a curry noodle dish. Very flavorful, but could use more spice. The other dish was the Spicy Chicken with Crisp Basil. It is ground chicken breast sautéed with minced fresh chili and sweet basil. Again, it was good but could use more spice. Ask for one star more than what you normally order if you like a little kick to your dish.

Prices are reasonable for the area, and the service has been outstanding each time. Give them a try if you want to break away from the norm.
