Dining and drinking review: La Waffletz

Happy New Year from The Esplanade News! This weekend, why not start the new year by trying something new? Kurt Kwon has found another little hidden gem within walking distance of home, and this time there are waffles and cookies involved. La Waffletz at Freighthouse Square has earned a rave review from Kurt, so you know it must be good!

La Waffletz is located at 2501 East D Street (Freighthouse Square)

Another little gem at the Freighthouse Square! I'm usually not a sweets/dessert person, but this place will make you one. Who doesn't like waffles? But a desert waffle? This I had to try. The chef is French, and he's making Belgian waffles... go figure, but the results were fantastic. He makes each order by hand. Fresh, right there on the spot, with his incredible batter and sugars that make dessert waffles a whole new category of dessert.

I tried the banana split waffle with chocolate ice cream, fresh whipped cream, all drizzled with a generous portion of chocolate sauce. The waffle has a nice, chewy texture that holds up to all the ingredients. There are a variety of different toppings you can have with your waffles, however, the waffle is satisfying just by itself.

As good as the waffles were, the star in my opinion were the macarons. I tried the lemon poppy and double chocolate macarons. Perfectly baked, crispy on the outside, but so light, fluffy and gooey on the inside. If you are a chocolate lover, the chocolate macaron is a must try. Ask any pastry chef to make macarons and they will quake in their boots. This chef has it figured out for sure. Give them a try if you want something different for dessert... or don't if you don't want to be hooked!
