News and notes for this week

Several items of news and note for this week:

  • Mexican restaurant coming to the Foss Waterway:
The Tacoma News Tribune reported a few days ago that a Seattle-based Mexican restaurant, Casco Antiguo, will be coming to The Henry. Read more HERE.

  • Pierce Transit bus route will remain on Dock Street:
A few weeks ago, The Esplanade News reported HERE about the imminent cancellation of Pierce Transit Route 13/14, which runs on Dock Street and stops in front of The Esplanade. Thanks to overwhelming public commentary, Pierce Transit has reversed course. From their press release:

    "
During the public comment period on the proposed route restructure, almost one-quarter of the comments received addressed the possible elimination of the Route 13, which runs from the Tacoma Dome Station through downtown Tacoma and Old Town, and on to Proctor. In response to these public comments and requests, the Pierce Transit Board elected to retain Route 13."

  • Neighborhood trash: "Be the change you wish to see"
Fifth floor resident Shoko Yoshikawa was tired of seeing trash in the vicinity of Dock Street, 15th Street, A Street, and the locomotive sculpture near Columbia Bank. So she asked the City of Tacoma for gloves and plastic trash bags, and she has periodically been picking up trash and filling bags. She lets the city know where the bags are left, and the city sends a truck to pick them up.

Anyone who wishes to help can contact Shoko for gloves and bags at shoko62@hotmail.com. To get your own gloves and trash bags from the city, contact Cindy DeGrosse at cindy.degrosse@cityoftacoma.org. To make the job even easier, "trash grabbers" can be purchased from Amazon HERE.

  • Thank you to all who donated toys:
The Esplanade Social Committee reports that 70 toys and a cash donation were collected during December's Toys for Tots drive. Thank you to all residents who participated in providing toys for underprivileged children this holiday season.

  1. In further reading, the 14 is indeed eliminated, the 13 is retained but will no longer run on Saturdays. Service will be hourly, which it is now. When you add in the 14, service between the 13 & 14 is 30m to TDS or Proctor, so with the loss of the 14, service will only be hourly. I am still happy we have something down here!
